Oh the places we’ll go…

“You’re off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting,
So… get on your way!”
― Dr. Seuss, Oh, The Places You’ll Go!

So get on our way? That sounds so much easier on paper.

Our struggle to get work visas, which led to the channeler, is (maybe) one step closer. On a too-quick-trip to New Jersey to visit Dan’s aunts, Helen and Pat, we stopped and had another set of fingerprints made, then sent them to the “channeler” to see if they could really get our FBI background checks quicker than just sending prints directly to the FBI.

Yesterday, I received an email from the channeler. I was thrilled–until I opened it. My fingerprints didn’t show enough loops and whorls and swirls and squiggles and whatever else the FBI thinks they should have. What??? I was crushed. I failed fingerprinting 101. Flunked out. Ugh. I made appointment #3 for more fingerprints today–after drawing on my fingers all night last night with a marker. I was practicing fingerprintology. Ink and roll baby. Ink and roll.

To make matters worse (or maybe better), when we got home tonight, Dan’s FBI background check was HERE! Great for him, sad for Ms. Crappy-Fingerprinty.

Morals to the story: 1) ALWAYS use a channeler if you need a background check. Best $50 ever spent. 2) Triple check your loops and whorls and swirls and squiggles. If they look mushy, spend more money to make sure they look loopy before they are sent to the FBI. 3) Be patient, Grasshopper. Applying for an international work visa is not for the anxious or impatient.

And then there are birds. We don’t know New Zealand birds.

We’ve already looked it up. New Zealand does not have hummingbirds–at least not like our Tennessee hummingbirds. Huh? We love birds. But New Zealand has lots of birds that we are clueless about.

Start with Kiwis. No silly–not the green fruit. We haven’t see any kiwis, although we looked really hard while we were in New Zealand in December 2015. We saw a kiwi sign, does that count? Maybe not.

Then there are the Keas and Kotukus.

And what about the little guy with the white goggles sitting on the plant with incredible teal blue flowers? Who is he??

Oh  sometimes we feel so mixed up.

“You’ll get mixed up, of course, as you already know. You’ll get mixed up with many strange birds as you go. So be sure when you step. Step with care and great tact and remember that Life’s a Great Balancing Act. Just never forget to be dexterous and deft. And never mix up your right foot with your left.”

― Dr. Seuss, Oh, The Places You’ll Go!

  1. Just love your blog Lisa. for the record the little guy sitting on the blue flower is called a waxeye and they come out by the thousands at certain times of the year. We feed them in the winter by putting out sweet syrups or making a “Bird ball’ out of an apple rolled in a mixture of lard, honey and breadcrumbs and tied up in a piece of muslin and hung in the trees, they eat them right out until there is just the apple core hanging in the muslin.
