Barrytown is a nearby community that has a fun quirky art/music/community venue, the Barrytown Settlers Hall.
It is located about 31 kilometers away from us but the Coast Road is skinny, squiggly, and dark. Imagine this road at night–yep, that is it:
We were invited to the Barrytown Hall Midwinter Art Auction Steampunk Supper and Dance. You can’t miss a chance like that.
If you don’t know what “steampunk” is, look here. Their brief explanation:
“Steampunk is a quirky and fun genre of science fiction that features steam-powered technology. It is often set in an alternate, futuristic version of 19th century Victorian England.
The Steampunk future is driven by unusual steam powered devices – the ‘world gone mad’ as Victorian people may have imagined it. Examples are machines like those in the writing of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, and in tv shows such as Dr. Who.”
Being new to the area, we: 1) did not know how dressed up people would be, and 2) had nothing to dress up in. You don’t ship steampunk accessories across the world, or at least we didn’t.
After borrowing a wild variety of possibilities, we managed to semi-steam punk it. Check out my (Tania’s) boots!
Well, we fit in with the crowd–there were some exceptional costumes. And we managed to buy an incredible handprinted pillow from Colby and Steph of Safran House (they also did the incredible poster for this event).
I’ll let the rest of the photos speak for themselves. For the record: we had a blast!
